General Board Responsibilities

Continuing Education

To keep the program fresh and to make use of the best ideas from other programs, the Board will send its members to national and state conferences and other training seminars as deemed appropriate. The decision to attend these events will be based on specific needs and in consideration of the budget. To make the best use of education dollars, the Board will evaluate the effectiveness of each event as it is completed.

Recruitment

On-going recruitment is one of the most important Board responsibilities. The Chair and Chair-Elect will oversee this effort. The main focus will consist of visiting employers to highlight Leadership Nelson County (LNC) and explain its program benefits to the employee and the sponsoring employer. Individual Board members will actively recruit qualified persons to submit applications. This process will be done on a year-round basis, with emphasis in the 2-3 months prior to the application deadline.

Publicity

To spread the word about Leadership Nelson County, the Board of Directors will:

  • Take every opportunity to obtain coverage through local Media & Publications.

  • Maintain an ongoing list of financial contributors, posting this list at all Leadership Nelson County functions, and periodically publishing the list in the Kentucky Standard.

  • Host information booths at community events.

  • Be available to speak at clubs, civic organizations, town meetings, businesses, and all other relevant activities/events.

  • Use every opportunity, professionally and personally, to discuss LNC and its benefits.

  • Develop and maintain a website.

Forms / Brochures

The Secretary will be responsible for maintaining a supply of the following:

  • Applications will be updated each year, printed and made available at convenient sites within the county. The Secretary will periodically check these sites to assure an ample supply is on hand.

  • Leadership Nelson County tri-fold brochures will also available at the same locations throughout the county.

  • Certificates of Appreciation for speakers will be made available in printed form so that the class Secretary can fill in the names of the recipient.

  • Letterhead and envelopes will be used by the Board and class secretary for correspondence related to Leadership Nelson County.

Alumni Involvement

The Board will continually seek ways to involve alumni in its activities as speakers, mentors and recruiting new Board members. The Board will also encourage alumni attendance at the Welcoming Orientation and Graduation programs.

Archives

The Board will maintain the LNC archives. For planning day sessions, the LNC class will have available to them a list of speakers and resources composed of individuals who have participated in past Leadership Nelson County classes and other individuals with proven leadership skills.

Community Leadership Nelson County Resources

As a separate mission from conducting the yearly Leadership Nelson County program, the Board may elect to host seminars, present speakers and/or provide additional educational opportunities for development and growth available to the general public.

Fund Raising

Each new Leadership Nelson County class will be self-sufficient, i.e., the tuition will cover all expenses for meals, entrance fees, welcoming orientation, a class retreat and graduation. As a separate function the Board will conduct fundraising to support the activities of the Board including continuing education, community programs, forms and brochures, and other miscellaneous expenses.

Pride / Professionalism

A long-term goal of the Board is to “Make Leadership Nelson County a premier, top-notch organization of which people are proud to be an alumnus” (See Board minutes, June 8, 2001). To meet this responsibility, the Board will continually strive to improve its program by enhancing the recruitment process, raising corporate and individual sponsorships, expanding LNC into the area of seminars and training for the community at large, speaking at civic group meetings, and presenting LNC as a prestigious and professional organization.

Code of Conduct

It is the Board’s responsibility to establish and maintain rules for every Leadership Nelson County class in order to ensure the integrity of the program. The existing rules are as follows:

  • Attendance at the day program is required. An allowed absence of no more than 1½ days is permitted during the course of this program. Day sessions are scheduled from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a sign in period from 8:00 – 8:15. Any amount of time after 8:15 will count as ½ day absence. The day chair is responsible for monitoring attendance to determine if anyone arrives late, leaves early or is absent at any time throughout the day.

  • As stated in the application, all candidates are required to attend both the welcoming orientation and overnight retreat. This is a critical time for the new LNC class members to meet and form alliances; it is also a time when pertinent questions are answered regarding the programs/events of the year, the community project and any other important issues. Mandatory attendance at the graduation ceremony is required as part of the class members first year commitment to the LNC program.

  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited during attendance at day sessions and community projects. Abuse of this policy may result in dismissal from the program. Class officers should use their discretion when providing alcoholic beverages at the welcoming orientation, retreat and graduation events.

  • In consideration of class members and guest speakers please refrain from smoking.

  • The use of cell phones and electronic devices is restricted to breaks and lunch only.
